Educational Grants

Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. (JJVCI) is committed to supporting education through independent educational activities, including continuing medical education (CME), continuing education (CE) and non-accredited educational activities.

Helping to support education

Educational grants for ophthalmology, optometry and paraoptometrics made through and funded by JJVCI must support bona fide educational activities for healthcare providers, caregivers, or patients. In addition, Educational Grants are provided without condition of product use and are not contingent upon any commitment to purchase or recommend the use of our products.

The JJVCI Medical Affairs group is responsible for administering support for independent education activities. Medical Affairs adheres to a strict policy governing independent education activity. Our policy is based on guidelines set by government agencies (e.g. FDA, OIG), accrediting organizations (e.g. ACCME, COPE, NCLE), industry (e.g. PhRMA, AdvaMed), and medical associations (e.g. AMA, AOA). One of the goals of our policy is to ensure that the Accredited Provider/Educational Partner retains all control governing the program, and that JJVCI does not exercise any direct or indirect influence over any aspect associated with an independent educational program or activity.

The Open Payments provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, commonly known as the Physician Payment Sunshine Act, require that certain transfers of value (TOV) from pharmaceutical or medical device manufacturers to physicians, including optometrists and ophthalmologists ("covered recipients") must be tracked and reported by the manufacturer.

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued regulations that exempt from the reporting requirement some but not all certain payments made by manufacturers for support of continuing education (CE) programs. As a result, JOHNSON & JOHNSON INSTITUTE will be required to track and report the funding it provides for your program if it involves certain "transfers of value" (TOVs) to covered recipients participating in your program.

Payments that qualify as TOVs, if made by an organization to a covered recipient with funding provided by THE VISION CARE INSTITUTE®, LLC, and therefore subject to reporting by THE VISION CARE INSTITUTE®, LLC include but are not limited to, payments for:

  • Speaker Honoraria
  • Travel and Lodging Expenses
  • Food and Beverage Expenses
  • Continuing Education Certification Fees

JJVCI has made the decision to support only those educational program costs that do not qualify as a transfer of value to a covered recipient and, therefore, fall outside the payment categories referenced above. We believe this approach will minimize the burden not only on JOHNSON & JOHNSON INSTITUTE but also on the program sponsor requesting the funding, for tracking and reporting to us the flow of program funding that would be necessary for us to fulfill our reporting requirements.
